The PUBLIC C9-AL (Aluminum) is a sleeker version of our best-selling city bike and our lightest-weight step-through frame to date. This smart, lightweight commuter uses a modern frame design and is well-suited for breezing through errands around the city as well as longer commutes.

The PUBLIC C9-AL is our best step-through city bike, with more performance than ever and unbeatable value. We went back to the drawing board with a totally redesigned frame made from PUBLIC premium aluminum tubing. The Shimano 9-speed drivetrain provides a wider range of gears to conquer even steeper hills and longer distances, and the Rapid-fire trigger shifter provides quick, effortless shifting.

To keep this bike trim and sleek, we swapped in a lighter-weight saddle and commuter-tested handlebars while nixing the fenders, chain guard and kickstand altogether. Weighing in at just 25lbs, the PUBLIC C9-AL is a full 5lbs lighter than our average steel bike. This weight savings makes a big difference when you’re carrying the bike up or down stairs or during your regular commute.

This walk-up-apartment-friendly commuter features a low entry design that makes it easy to put a foot down when stopped, and allows you to get on and off the bike with ease in everyday attire. Puncture-resistant commuter bike tires deliver our signature smooth ride, even on rough city streets, and strong dual-pivot caliper brakes let you ride hard and stop on a dime in any traffic jam.

Lastly, front and rear rack mounts are included to accommodate a range of baskets and cargo racks, so you can let the bike do all of the heavy lifting (racks not included). You'd be hard-pressed to find a better bike at such an affordable price, with thoughtful design and quality components normally found on bikes costing much more.

With refinements in style and performance, we can confidently say the PUBLIC C9-AL is the best commuter bike available whether you’re going uptown, downtown, or all-around town.

Love! Favorite bike ever!

"Love how light weight and comfortable it is, great for riding around town :)"

Simple is Good

"I love the simplicity of the C9 Aluminum. Repair and service are easy. I chose the step-through frame because I am recovering from surgery on my fractured right ankle. To get more forward lean, I installed a mustache handlebar with aero brakes and a right bar-end shifter, and I also installed a touring saddle. The best place to mount the water bottle cage was on the handlebar. I mounted a handlebar bag on the seat post. And I also put on a kickstand."

A rare find

"I was looking for a light bike that I could carry up stairs - older person. need a bike I am not bent over putting pressure on my wrists - carpool tunnel. And something that actually looks cool unique and snappy. This bike is that. The seat is comfortable and the handle bars are just slightly lower than upright so I can get some speed. . It’s good on the road - fast and way easier to turn than the last two bikes Stolen from my house. Now I can easily carry it on. Even my skeptical boyfriend likes it. Hurray! True advertising. I wish it had come up sooner in the search engine for light weight bike. . but I found it -and it came a week later."

Really love this bike. The

"Really love this bike. The ride is amazing and its so light. It is easy for me to lift on and off the rack in my garage. Super stylish too; I've received lots of compliments."

kinky chain (not in a good way)

"The bike, overall, is great. Unfortunately, it arrived with a faulty chain (I couldn't use some of my gears). The nice folks at Mike's Bikes replaced the chain and now the bike rides great :) I'm a fan of Public Bikes in general. They're stylish and sturdy. Great for getting around the city. My old bike is a Public and I finally upgraded to a lighter frame to save my back."

"I love it! The C9 is light and comfortable! The assembly was easy. I planned to get the C7 but it was sold out. The C9 was my plan B. I was hesitant at first, but I am extremely happy with it now! The only modification that I would consider is to replace the handlebar with the Public brunch handlebar to match the C7 better. Due to spinal issues, my back needs to be straight up."

Given that the frame has no braze-ons for a water bottle cage, what is your recommendation for carrying a water bottle?
Thanks for asking, Peter! We also sell handlebar-mounted bottle cage adapters! https://publicbikes.pro/collections/bottles-cages/products/handlebar-mount-bottle-cage-adaptor-blk https://publicbikes.pro/collections/bottles-cages/products/velo-orange-handlebar-mount-bottle-cage-adaptor-silver

Yes! The C9 has a quick-release equipped front wheel for easy transport!
What is seat tube length of C9 in inches for med/large
Hello There, Thanks for reaching out to PUBLIC. The seat tube length on the Medium/Large sizing option is roughly ~ 20 inches or 51cm. This size is recommended for riders between the heights of ~ 5'5"-5'11". Best, The PUBLIC Team
Are there gears on the bike?
YES! The Public C9 features a 9-speed Altus drive train.
Will there be matching fenders and chain guards for this bike? Thank you!
Hello, We do not have plans to add a matching chain guard and fenders to this model. To keep this bike lightweight and sleek, we've nixed the fenders, chain guard and kickstand altogether. Fenders and chain guards can be added to this model, however, they would need to be purchased separately. Best, The PUBLIC Team
